Cruise 2014 - The Inspiration

A cruise is all about well-being, energy and the holiday spirit... Through this contemporary collection, Raf Simons, Dior's creative director, explores the very idea of the cruise lifestyle, both literally and metaphorically.

The collection revealed historic motifs and reinterpretations of Dior archives melded with a sporty vibe meant to be worn with a light, carefree attitude. ""The focus for me here was on lace and energy"", explained Raf Simons. ""It was a challenge, I never worked with lace before. It was about transforming the meaning of the material; so that it wasn't too romantic, nor historical, nor old-fashioned, but rather something playful, colourful and modern – with lots of energy"".
Lace was therefore a theme that ran throughout the collection. It appeared in a myriad of forms: printed, embroidered, bonded and glazed. The Dior ateliers have used their infinite expertise to take lace to new heights, giving it a new expression and appearance.

Other traditional elements from the Dior wardrobe were featured with the same energetic, relaxed feel. The lines of the iconic Bar jacket were reworked to look less structured and more rounded. Redesigned and redefined, Corolle gowns with long, billowing skirts evoked the history of Dior and its first runway shows in which endless yards of fabric seemed to provide a revolutionary affront to the restrictions of the post-war era. Cut in new materials, they featured biker jacket zip fronts that were layered over knit swimsuits that echoed both the diving suit and the traditional bathing suit, creating a striking condensation of history.

Sun wear was another common theme of the show. Often seen layered under lace, it was one of the elements that gave the collection its athletic edge: functional, luxurious and comfortable. Laid-back elegance is another theme that surfaced with a blend of dressy and relaxed styles, reflected in footwear that naturally combined the most cutting edge athletic footwear techniques with the historic signature of Dior: the comma heel inspired by the Roger Vivier era. The collection also featured ultra-refined cuffs and necklines covered with glazed rubber, thereby further showcasing its blend of sporty style and classic elegance.

The Monte Carlo beachfront served the backdrop for this cruise show. Like a dynamic horizontal strip of azure blue set within the décor, it emerged from the open side of runway, on which the collection's silhouettes seemed to glide effortlessly within this exquisitely simple setting. The collection colours and the effects of movement in the garments seemed to come to life in this place, bathed in the unique light of the Mediterranean. It reaffirmed the original spirit of cruise wear and simultaneously provided a profound reflection on the future of the house.
